The Lagos State Government has taken assertive action to confront the persistent issues of traffic disruptions and maintain the structural stability of its bridges.

This action comes in the form of a decisive 7-day ‘Vacation Order’ directed towards motorists and commercial bus drivers who habitually utilize these essential transportation pathways.

This crucial order, which was officially released on a Monday morning and signed by Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, underscores the government’s concern over the blatant disregard of regulations by drivers and its impact on both traffic flow and the bridges themselves.

Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, has taken the reins in enforcing this ‘Vacation Order.’

He stated unequivocally that the need to remove obstructions that hinder the free flow of traffic on the State’s bridges is paramount.

The state government is channelling significant resources into constructing standardised bus terminals and garages to accommodate commercial activities across Lagos.

Giwa emphasised, “Every motorist and commercial bus driver operating along ‘Apongbon’ and ‘Idumota’ (Carter) Bridges, ‘Elegbata,’ ‘Ebute-Ero,’ and ‘Ejalonibu’ must, as a matter of urgency, vacate these areas.” After the 7-day ultimatum, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (@followlastma) will commence rigorous enforcement operations to ensure zero tolerance for such activities throughout the state.

It’s essential to note that these drivers’ actions on the bridges are in clear violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, as amended.

After the ultimatum concludes, any vehicles found in contravention will face immediate prosecution in the Lagos State Mobile Court.

With this ‘Vacation Order,’ the Lagos State Government is putting its foot down to regain control of its traffic arteries and ensure the safety and integrity of its vital bridges. It’s a move that promises to restore order on the roads and enhance the well-being of commuters in the bustling city of Lagos.
