Amid the swirl of economic hardships and the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria, the House of Representatives has taken a bold stance to defend their recent purchase of new vehicles.

Akin Rotimi, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stepped into the spotlight on Sunday to clarify the rationale behind this decision.

Rotimi, in a statement, underscored that these vehicles aren’t a luxury but rather an essential tool for lawmakers to effectively perform their oversight functions.

Why the automotive splurge? It’s all about reaching the far-flung corners of Nigeria, examining government programmes and policies, and, interestingly, preserving their independence from the executive branch.

“These vehicles,” Rotimi clarified, “are utilitarian, operation-specific vehicles connected to their oversight responsibilities within the standing committees. They are not personal gifts to our esteemed members.”

Rotimi also highlighted that the House of Representatives has been tightening its belt, with its budgetary allocation decreasing in recent years.

As a nod to cost-cutting, Rotimi urged everyone to focus on the right targets and refrain from sowing discontent among honourable members who simply want to do their jobs without financial constraints.

The procurement of new vehicles for lawmakers remains a contentious issue in Nigeria. Critics label it as extravagant, especially in a time of economic turmoil, and argue that the cars are often misused for personal purposes.

On the flip side, lawmakers contend that these vehicles are indispensable for their effective performance. They underscore the need to venture into remote areas of the nation for oversight purposes and to maintain their independence from the executive branch.
