Minister Nyesom Wike of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Engr. Shehu Ahmed Hadi, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), demanding an explanation regarding the government’s stance on the partial demolition of the National Mosque and the associated compensation plan.
The National Mosque’s land is slated for road expansion, which has led its management to request compensation in the form of alternative plots.
During a meeting with the Abuja National Mosque Management Committee, led by its Chairman, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe, Minister Wike emphasized that the reports alleging his administration’s promotion of policies against any particular religion were untrue.
Minister Wike clarified that he holds the Sultan of Sokoto in high regard and assured that he would always support anything related to the National Mosque.
He also expressed his commitment to ensuring that worship centres, regardless of their affiliation, receive the necessary support.
He further denounced the exploitation of religious sentiments by those attempting to gain political advantages. Wike maintained that his policies are designed to benefit all FCT residents and Nigerians as a whole.
The minister stressed that he bears no ill will towards any religious group or ethnicity, and cautioned against politicians who seek to use religion as a weapon against him.
Wike assured that the FCTA would continue to support the maintenance of the National Mosque and the National Ecumenical Centre, both of which have been declared national monuments. He encouraged religious leaders to preach unity and peaceful coexistence.
The Etsu Nupe appealed to Minister Wike to support the National Mosque’s maintenance project, which has faced delays. He also requested more time for the committee to develop the plots of land allocated by the FCTA.
Wike is taking action to address concerns related to the National Mosque’s partial demolition and compensation. He has vehemently denied any religious bias in his policies, emphasising his commitment to supporting worship centres and promoting unity among religious communities.
