FEMA Saves Thousands of Lives and Millions in Property During Disasters in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has reported that it saved 4,880 lives and N99.3 million worth of property during various disasters from January to the present.

This announcement was made by FEMA’s acting director-general, Ibrahim Sabo, during a media interactive session in Abuja.

Sabo revealed that the agency saved 1,842 lives in fire incidents, rescued 174 victims of building collapses, and saved 2,864 others from flood disasters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FEMA further stated that N99.3 million worth of property was safeguarded in fire outbreaks during the period under review.

Sabo emphasised that while eight lives were tragically lost in building collapses and flooding during the past nine months, many of these fatalities could have been avoided.

He also mentioned that the response time to emergencies had been reduced from five minutes to three minutes, thanks to FEMA’s efforts to strengthen its response capabilities and partnership with sister agencies.

The director of forecasting, response, and mitigation at FEMA, Florence Wenegieme, urged residents to pay attention to the agency’s warnings to prevent unnecessary deaths during disasters.
