Residents of Abuja Appeal to Government to Address Unregulated Rent Increases

Residents of Abuja are calling on the Federal Government to address the issue of arbitrary rent increases by landlords in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Many residents find it challenging to cope with rising rents, which are often increased without proper notice or regard for economic realities. Some residents have faced eviction threats due to their inability to meet these rent hikes.
They believe that government policies are needed to curb the trend and ensure that empty houses are occupied, especially when many people in the city are in need of affordable housing.
Landlords argue that increasing rents is necessary to cope with the rising costs of living in the country, including transportation and food.
However, tenants are struggling to make ends meet, and some suggest that the government should regulate rent increases to protect residents from undue financial burdens.
A bill seeking to address this issue has been introduced in the 9th Senate, which aims to regulate the mode of payment of rent on residential apartments and office spaces in the FCT, aiming to end the practice of demanding yearly advance rent payments.
