NEMA Issues Warning of Potential Flooding Due to Oyan Dam Water Release

0

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning to residents in riverine communities in Lagos and Ogun states to relocate immediately due to the risk of heavy flooding caused by the release of water from the Oyan Dam by the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority.

NEMA has also advised those travelling by waterways to use lifejackets for their safety.

The agency expressed concern over the attitude of some residents who have refused to wear life jackets while travelling by waterways.

NEMA has warned that anyone seen travelling without a lifejacket will be arrested by the enforcement team.

According to NEMA’s territorial coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, the release of water from the dam has been ongoing throughout the year, with the latest release starting on October 16, 2023.

The emergency management agencies have been in communication with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority, which has started reducing the release of water to ensure the safety of the dam.

Despite awareness and sensitization campaigns, some residents have not complied with safety standards, particularly the use of life safety jackets.

NEMA continues to assess the situation and monitor water levels in affected communities, with the recent observations showing that water levels are starting to recede in most areas.
