The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has announced plans to deploy NDLEA personnel to all 774 local government areas in Nigeria in 2024.

This deployment is part of efforts to strengthen the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, particularly in local communities.

Marwa’s announcement came in response to a request for a partnership and the deployment of more NDLEA officers made by the governor of Katsina State, Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda. Governor Radda sought to address the problem of drug abuse and its link to insecurity in his state.

With the NDLEA’s staff strength expected to reach 15,000 by the end of the year, Marwa emphasised the need to deploy personnel to the local government areas.

Currently, the NDLEA operates through zonal commands, state commands, and area commands, but the new plan aims to take the fight against drug abuse and trafficking directly to the local communities.

Marwa stated that tackling drug abuse is crucial, as it has a significant impact on the lives of youth and communities.

He noted that drug abuse often fuels criminal activities, and by addressing the drug issue, the NDLEA can contribute to enhancing security.

He also suggested the formation of state drug control committees in which the NDLEA would play a key role, with the first lady of each state serving as the committee’s chairperson.

This approach aims to address drug-related issues at multiple levels and includes sensitization and advocacy efforts.

Governor Radda welcomed this partnership and emphasised the need for greater cooperation to combat drug abuse, reduce banditry activities, and improve the state’s economy.

The collaboration between the NDLEA and state governments is seen as essential to addressing the challenges related to drug abuse and its impact on security and social well-being.
