Free Eye Surgeries Initiative in Jigawa State Brings Light to “Thousands” in Need

A heartwarming story has emerged from Jigawa State, Nigeria, where a visually impaired man, Hassan Gunka, regained his eyesight after two challenging years of blindness.
This miraculous transformation came after Mr. Gunka received sponsored surgery provided by the Jigawa State government in collaboration with the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), which offered hope and healing to many residents with visual impairments.
Hassan Gunka, hailing from Jahun Local Government in Jigawa State, expressed deep gratitude to his wife for her unwavering support during his period of blindness.
He shared the immense difficulties he faced during this time and acknowledged that life could have been much harder if not for his wife’s dedicated care.
He narrated how she guided him through daily tasks, such as helping him shower and use the restroom. She ensured his safety and comfort by gently assisting him with essential activities.
Mr. Gunka was profoundly moved by his wife’s selfless devotion and could not find enough words to express his appreciation.
Attributing his blindness to old age and limited access to healthcare services, Mr. Gunka shared his relief in regaining his sight.
He revealed that he had sought treatment at the Jahun hospital but found solace in the surgery conducted at Dutse General Hospital, facilitated by the Jigawa State government and WAMY.
The free eye surgery initiative, launched on October 22nd, aims to provide medical assistance to 3,000 individuals across the state, alleviating their vision impairments.
Minor eye issues are also being addressed, with patients receiving free medical glasses and necessary medications following diagnoses.
It is worth noting that the northwest region of Nigeria, where Jigawa State is situated, has experienced a significant prevalence of blindness.
The state has grappled with eye conditions such as onchocerciasis (commonly known as river blindness) and trachoma.
Recent reports reveal that Jigawa State has made commendable efforts in treating cases of these eye diseases, providing hope and a brighter future for those affected.
Furthermore, the Christian Blind Mission (CBM), an international charitable organisation dedicated to assisting visually impaired individuals, donated essential eye treatment equipment valued at N100 million to Jigawa State in their fight against blindness.
This contribution has significantly contributed to the state’s efforts to combat visual impairments and offer better prospects for its residents.
Hassan Gunka’s story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of healthcare initiatives and the unwavering support of loved ones, bringing hope and healing to those facing vision challenges in Jigawa State.
