The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Sai’du Alkali, has officially launched the e-ticketing services for the Lagos-Ibadan and Itakpe-Warri train services in Nigeria.

The e-ticketing system is designed to improve efficiency and convenience in booking and paying for train tickets, eliminating the need for physical tickets and cash transactions.

The contract for the e-ticketing of these rail routes was approved by the Federal Executive Council in May 2023 at a cost of N1.96 billion, with an expected revenue of N176 billion over ten years.

The platform, which aims to provide ease of ticket purchase and enhance passenger safety on trains, will be accessible to the public starting on November 1, 2023.

This move is also expected to curb ticket racketeering and promote transparency and efficiency in rail transportation.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okharia, highlighted the positive impact of e-ticketing on revenue generation.

He noted that the initiative has already increased weekly revenue on the Warri-Itakpe route to N28 million, and it is expected to further boost revenue while curbing unethical practices and racketeering.

E-ticketing is viewed as a significant step forward in modernising Nigeria’s railway system and ensuring a more seamless and secure travel experience for passengers.
