The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has asserted that he has not committed any offence that would justify his impeachment by the State House of Assembly.

He made this statement on Monday while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex, shortly after the House members, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, initiated the impeachment process against him.

Governor Fubara questioned the grounds for his impeachment, stating, “Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment.”

He reassured the people of Rivers State that he would continue to work to ensure they received the benefits of democracy. He also indicated that he would address the matter further at an appropriate time.

This development follows earlier reports of gunshots and teargas fired within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex as lawmakers convened to begin the impeachment process against the governor.

The lawmakers also suspended the House leader, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor.

These events occurred in the aftermath of a fire at the Assembly Complex the previous night.
