Tinubu Threatens to Remove Underperforming Ministers and Sets Ambitious Goal to Lift 50 Million Out of Poverty

President Bola Tinubu, during the opening of a three-day cabinet retreat, announced his intention to sign a performance bond with ministers and permanent secretaries, warning that any underperforming member would be removed.

The retreat’s theme was “Delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda,” and Tinubu expressed his commitment to lifting 50 million Nigerians out of poverty.

He urged ministers to focus on ministry progress, take bold initiatives, and make Nigeria’s population an asset.

Tinubu also introduced a Results Delivery Unit, headed by Hadiza Bala-Usman, to coordinate and review ministerial performance.

He emphasised the need for accountability and efficient governance.

He encouraged ministers and government officials to make decisions and not be afraid but also cautioned against antagonising supervisors.

He stressed the importance of working together and pushing for progress, saying, “Perfection is only that of Almighty God.” Tinubu also urged civil servants to cooperate with ministers and form a strong team.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, expressed loyalty and dedication to President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, emphasising the retreat’s purpose to prepare ministers and participants on government processes and practises.

The retreat aimed to ensure ministries, departments, and agencies deliver on the agenda’s priorities.

It focused on government processes, relationships with stakeholders, delivery frameworks, and addressing tasks directed by the President.

The President’s commitment to improving governance and driving Nigeria’s development was a central theme of the retreat, emphasising the need for efficiency, transparency, and progress.
