Kano State High Court Grants Order to Halt State Government’s Actions Against Private Schools

A Kano State High Court has issued an interim order to prevent the state government from taking any action against private primary and secondary schools.
The court granted this ex-parte order, directing the government to maintain the status quo. The order came after a motion ex parte was filed by Barrister AbdulHafees D. Khalid on behalf of the applicants.
The applicants, in this case, are various organisations, including the incorporated trustees of the Association of Model Islamic Schools, Nigeria, and the Incorporated Trustees of Independent Schools Proprietors’ Association Kano, among others.
The respondents named in the case are the Kano State Government, the Governor of Kano State, the Attorney General of Kano State, Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board, and Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar.
The court’s interim injunction order prohibits the respondents from taking any steps to enforce an updated notice related to non-compliance with Kano State Law 2014, which had been issued to the applicants.
The court has scheduled the hearing of the motion on notice for November 21st, 2023.
The ongoing dispute between the state government and private school owners revolves around issues such as the revalidation of operational licences and school fee increases.
This legal action seeks to address these contentious matters, providing clarity and a fair resolution to the dispute.
