Kano Governorship Election Appeal: Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Case Set for Monday

The Appeal Court in Abuja has scheduled Monday for the hearing of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s appeal.

He is contesting the Kano Election Petition Tribunal’s decision to nullify his election in favour of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.

In a ruling on September 20, 2023, a three-judge panel led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay invalidated Governor Yusuf’s election, citing that 165,663 of his votes were invalid because they lacked INEC signatures or stamps.

Yusuf criticized the tribunal’s decision, calling it “unfair” and a “miscarriage of justice.”

The parties involved in the case include Governor Yusuf and the NNPP, as well as the opposition APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC initially declared Governor Yusuf the winner of the March 18, 2023 election with 1,019,602 votes, while Gawuna secured 890,705 votes.

However, after the tribunal subtracted the 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total, he was left with 853,939 votes, which was 30,000 votes less than Gawuna’s 890,705 votes.

As a result, the court declared the APC candidate as the winner of the governorship election and ordered INEC to withdraw Yusuf’s certificate.

The upcoming Appeal Court hearing will be crucial in determining the final outcome of this election dispute.
