Zamfara State Commissioner Accuses Former Governor of Misappropriating Resources

Zamfara State’s Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Abdulmalik Gajam, has accused former Governor Bello Matawalle of mismanaging the state’s resources during his tenure.

Gajam claimed that critical sectors like water, health, education, and the economy suffered severe neglect under Matawalle’s administration.

He also alleged that money meant for healthcare services in the state was misappropriated.

According to Gajam, Zamfara State was ranked poorly in various aspects, such as economic output, importation, business competition, industrialization, healthcare, education, and information and communication technology (ICT) based on statistics by Analysts Data Services and Resources (ADSR).

He criticised Matawalle’s administration for not paying for WAEC or NECO exams for students and failing to construct significant roads.

Matawalle, who was governor from 2019 to 2023, lost his bid for a second term in March. He is currently serving as the Minister of State for Defence.

Matawalle’s former aide, Anas Abdullahi, refuted Gajam’s allegations and accused the current administration of concocting lies.

Despite previous efforts to curtail insecurity in Zamfara State, it remains one of the most terrorised states in Nigeria, with bandits carrying out attacks on various targets.

Matawalle has not yet responded to the allegations, but this dispute highlights the challenges and controversies surrounding governance and security in the region.
