Nigeria and Algeria to Establish Direct Flight Route with New Agreement

The Federal Government is making preparations to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Algeria to establish a direct flight route between the two countries.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a meeting with a delegation from Algeria led by the Algerian ambassador to Nigeria.
Keyamo explained that although Nigeria has had a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Algeria for decades, it has not been fully utilized.
The existing BASA specifies the routes between Algiers and Lagos, but the agreement has not been effectively implemented over the years.
The Algerian delegation has expressed interest in reopening the route between Algiers and Lagos, and they also propose to add Abuja to their route.
In return, they have offered Nigeria the opportunity to fly to the second largest city in Algeria, Oran.
The Nigerian government is prioritizing the protection and promotion of its local airline operators, and as part of the agreement, they have requested reciprocity to benefit Nigerian carriers.
This move reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing air connectivity between Nigeria and Algeria while ensuring that local airlines can participate and thrive in the international market.
The MoU signifies progress in strengthening aviation ties between the two countries.
