The House of Representatives has issued a directive to the Chief of Naval Staff and relevant security agencies to take immediate and proactive measures against pirates operating in the waterways of Akwa Ibom State.
This decision comes in response to the motion presented by Alphonsus Uduak, the representative of Ikot Abasi/Mkpat Enin/Eastern Obolo Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State.
Uduak informed the House about the severe threat faced by fishermen in Akwa Ibom, who are being targeted and terrorized by pirates.
These criminals engage in acts of violence, including killings and maiming, and demand monthly royalties ranging from N400,000 to N600,000 from fishermen to allow them to operate in the waterways.
The motion, titled “Urgent need to stop the continuous killings of fishermen by pirates terrorising Akwa Ibom State Waterways,” emphasised the detrimental impact of these activities on the local economy and called for urgent intervention.
Uduak highlighted a recent incident where nine fishermen were killed and 15 others sustained gunshot and machete injuries in Uta Ewa, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.
He expressed concern over the increasing attacks, with pirates seizing over 200 wooden boats belonging to fishermen in the coastal areas.
In response to the motion, the House referred the matter to its Committees on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration, and Legislative Compliance for further action.
The move aims to address the pressing issue of piracy in Akwa Ibom State and ensure the safety of fishermen in the region.
