Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing the Abia-North zone, has secured another victory at the Court of Appeal, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Mao Ohuabunwa.

This comes days after he also triumphed over the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Nnamdi Iroh-Oji, at the same court.

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, upheld the judgement of the National Assembly Petitions Tribunal in Umuahia, which had earlier dismissed the petition of Ohuabunwa and LP’s Iro-Orji for lacking merit.

The court stated that the appellants failed to prove the allegation of disenfranchisement, while the respondents demonstrated that elections were conducted in all polling units.

The court dismissed the appeal, stating that the appellants did not plead the total number of persons who collected their voter cards and upheld the election of the former Abia State governor, noting that it complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Furthermore, the court set aside Ohuabunwa’s prayers to disqualify Kalu for allegedly admitting before the Federal High Court that he was convicted of fraud.

Kalu had secured a victory over LP’s Iroh-Oji earlier, with the court dismissing the plea to nullify his victory based on an admission of a past conviction.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the 2023 elections, securing 30,805 votes to defeat his opponents.

This victory reinforces his position as the senator representing the Abia-North zone.
