INEC Declares Incumbent Governor Douye Diri Winner of Bayelsa State Election

In the Bayelsa State governorship election held on Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the incumbent Governor, Douye Diri, as the winner.

Diri, who ran on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), secured victory against Chief Timipre Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and sixteen other contenders.

The State Returning Officer, Prof. Kuta Farouk, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, announced the results at the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu Media Centre, INEC, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Governor Diri won in six of the eight local government areas (LGAs) in the state, while Timipre Sylva won in two LGAs.

According to Prof. Farouk, Governor Diri secured 175,196 votes, while Chief Timipre Sylva received 110,108 votes.

The total number of registered voters was 1,056,862, and the number of accredited voters stood at 372,000.

The LGAs won by the PDP candidate include Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenagoa, Sagbama, Nembe, Ekeremor, Brass, and Southern Ijaw. Chief Sylva of the APC secured victories in Nembe and Brass LGAs.

The announcement of Governor Diri’s victory signifies his successful re-election bid, maintaining the PDP’s hold on the governorship seat in Bayelsa State.
