Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, recently addressed the financial challenges facing Nigeria, attributing them to the economic condition inherited by the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu.
He highlighted the difficult fiscal situation, characterising it as a “bankrupt country,” indicating severe financial constraints.
Despite these challenges, Ribadu affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a robust and effective defence management and security apparatus in the country.
He acknowledged the complexities of the current economic landscape, emphasising that the government is making efforts to meet the requirements, particularly for the armed forces, amid significant budgetary constraints.
Ribadu’s comments came during the Chief of Defence Intelligence Annual Conference 2023 in Abuja.
The conference, themed “Leveraging Defence Diplomacy and Effective Regional Collaboration for Enhanced National Security,” aimed to explore strategies for improving national security through diplomatic and collaborative efforts.
The National Security Adviser acknowledged the positive changes and improvements in the armed forces’ commitment to addressing prevailing security challenges both within and outside Nigeria.
He urged unity and support for the armed forces and security agencies, emphasising the need to stand by them during these challenging times.
While the financial constraints were acknowledged, the government’s resolve to address security challenges and invest in defence capabilities was emphasised.
The NSA expressed optimism that, with leadership support, the country would witness positive changes and improvements in the security landscape.
Ribadu’s statements reflect the acknowledgement of Nigeria’s financial difficulties, the commitment to addressing security challenges, and the call for unity and support for the armed forces amid economic constraints.
