The Ogun State government has taken action against Supreme Agro Limited, an agro-processing company located in the Igbesa community, Ado Odo Local Council, by shutting it down.
The closure comes in response to allegations of serious industrial pollution that has adversely affected the ecosystem of the host community.
Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, revealed that the decision to sanction the company was based on numerous complaints from the Igbesa community.
The State Environmental Task Force and the Commissioner had issued warnings before taking this action.
Despite the company’s initial denial, investigations confirmed that Supreme Agro Limited was guilty of industrial pollution.
It was found that the company was discharging untreated wastewater directly into the community, causing significant harm to the residents’ well-being.
Instead of installing effluent plants to treat wastewater before discharge, the company bypassed the necessary processes.
The commissioner emphasised that the state government will not tolerate actions that negatively impact the environment and the health of the host community.
The shutdown will only be lifted when the company takes appropriate measures to restore the environment and demonstrates responsibility in its production processes.
Oresanya commended the Igbesa Traditional Council for bringing the environmental issues to the government’s attention.
He also warned other companies operating in the state to adhere to environmental regulations and global best practices.
While the government supports industrial activities, it expects companies to operate responsibly and contribute positively to the well-being of host communities.
