The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has instructed its members to participate in the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The strike is a response to the reported assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo State, with the unions accusing the state government of complicity in the attack.

ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke stated that the strike is aimed at protecting the interests of Nigerian workers and union leadership.

Zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons have been urged to mobilize members for the action.

In response, the federal government criticized the planned nationwide strike, describing it as an “unwarranted attempt to blackmail the government.”

The government expressed disappointment with the decision of the unions to impose a strike on the entire country, considering it a matter involving the NLC president.

The government labeled the strike as illegal, immoral, unjustifiable, and irresponsible, asserting that the national economy and social activities should not be disrupted due to the personal interests of a labor leader.
