AGF Pledges Timely Prosecution of Alleged Terrorists

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has announced that the Nigerian government will resume the prosecution of alleged terrorists, including members of Boko Haram, within the next two weeks.

Fagbemi made this disclosure during the 40th Technical Commission and Plenary Meeting of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

The AGF highlighted the government’s commitment to bringing suspected terrorists to justice, emphasizing that efforts are underway to finalize facilities and procedures for their smooth and successful trial.

He mentioned the adoption of virtual trial methods to prevent delays and assured that the government is providing necessary funds for this purpose.

Fagbemi also discussed the achievements in combating money laundering and terrorist financing, citing over 500 convictions and N45 billion forfeitures in the last two years.

He stressed the importance of regional and international cooperation to effectively address these challenges.

In a related development, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, stated that violent extremism in some parts of Nigeria has been on the decline since President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May.

Ribadu, speaking at the All Nigeria Editors’ Conference, acknowledged the challenges the country is facing but called for patience, assuring that President Tinubu is working diligently to address critical issues.

President Tinubu is set to attend the G20 Compact with Africa (CwA) Conference in Berlin, Germany, where discussions will focus on enhancing economic and business cooperation.

The visit aims to attract foreign direct investment to Nigeria, building on previous engagements with German business organizations.

The AGF’s announcement reflects the government’s determination to address security challenges and bring terrorists to justice, while the NSA’s remarks provide insight into the efforts to improve the overall security situation in Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership.

The international engagement at the G20 conference highlights Nigeria’s commitment to fostering economic partnerships for sustainable development.
