Kano State is witnessing waves of protests following the recent court ruling that led to the dismissal of Governor Abba Yusuf by the Court of Appeal.
Demonstrators gathered along the Dan Agundi area of the state, expressing their discontent and demanding justice, even asserting their readiness to face severe consequences.
The unrest was triggered by the release of the Certified True Copy of the judgment, which, when scrutinised, appeared to conflict with the appellate court’s decision.
The protesters, undeterred by the police presence, voiced their grievances, adding to the growing tension in the North-Western state.
The legal saga began when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially declared Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the victor in the March 2023 poll.
However, the state governorship election petitions tribunal overturned this decision in September, prompting a legal battle.
The Court of Appeal, after months of legal proceedings, affirmed the tribunal’s ruling.
The key factor was Yusuf’s purported absence from the NNPP’s register, rendering him ineligible for the election.
Consequently, the court declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner, intensifying tensions in Kano State.
Notably, the appellate court’s decisions have recently led to the removal of three opposition party governors who were initially declared winners in the March 2023 elections.
In Zamfara, the court declared the poll inconclusive and ordered a fresh election in three local government areas.
In Plateau State, the court ousted PDP’s Caleb Mutfwang and directed INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to APC’s Nentawe Goshwe, citing the party’s violation of a court order regarding a valid congress.
