The Legal Attache of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Nigeria, Mr. Jack Smith, has lauded the recent appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
During a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s corporate headquarters in Abuja on November 22, 2023, Smith expressed his commendation for Olukoyede, citing the latter’s impressive credentials that, according to Smith’s personal research, make him well-suited to lead the EFCC.
Smith conveyed his congratulations to Olukoyede, stating, “I did my homework and research, and I discovered that your appointment is right.”
He also expressed satisfaction with the EFCC’s agenda of reform and refocusing, believing that these initiatives would propel the Commission’s anti-corruption mandate forward.
Smith welcomed the positive direction and rebranding efforts undertaken by the EFCC under Olukoyede’s leadership.
In response, Olukoyede expressed appreciation for the visit and highlighted the longstanding relationship between the FBI and Nigeria, predating the establishment of the EFCC.
He emphasised that his reform agenda was not entirely new but represented a commitment to more effective approaches in achieving the EFCC’s mandate.
According to Olukoyede, defining the focus of anti-corruption efforts is crucial for success.
While acknowledging the importance of obtaining results, Olukoyede stressed the significance of ethical means in achieving those outcomes.
He pledged continued commitment to the collaborative relationship between the EFCC and the FBI, characterizing the two agencies as partners in progress.
Olukoyede took the opportunity to brief the FBI team on key programmes planned by the EFCC, with a particular focus on a forthcoming public engagement addressing youth involvement in cybercrimes.
Expressing concern for the nation’s youth, Olukoyede outlined the Commission’s dedication to guiding them in the right direction and addressing external factors that may contribute to cybercriminal activities.
During the visit, Smith was accompanied by Jim Oscar and Ayotunde Solademi, further strengthening the ties between the FBI and the EFCC.
