In a resolute move to enforce the ban on motorcycle operations in designated areas, the Lagos State Government executed the crushing of 1,500 apprehended motorcycles, commonly known as okada. The ban applies to 10 Local Governments and 15 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos.
Supervised by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the crushing exercise signals the government’s unwavering commitment to implement measures against the operation of okada in restricted zones. Osiyemi underscored that this regular crushing initiative aims to convey a stern message to okada operators, riders, and passengers, urging them to steer clear of the banned areas to evade potential imprisonment.
Emphasizing the significance of the ban, Osiyemi stated, “The ban on Okada in specified regions is crucial for maintaining order, reducing risks associated with unauthorized motorcycle operation and also improving security.”
The prohibited Local Government Areas include Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, and Eti-Osa. Additionally, the ban extends to Local Council Development Areas such as Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba, and Coker Aguda, among others.
Osiyemi urged okada operators to comply with the ban order in restricted areas, highlighting that okada is not a secure means of commercial transportation and does not align with the transport policy of the State.
Present at the crushing exercise were other key officials, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa. The move showcases the government’s determination to enforce regulations aimed at enhancing public safety, reducing traffic risks, and maintaining order in the state.
