Atiku Voices Frustration Over American University of Nigeria’s Progress

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed dissatisfaction with the management of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), which he founded 19 years ago.

Speaking at an event marking this year’s celebration of the institution’s Founder’s Day, Atiku revealed his frustrations, stating that the university has not firmly established itself as he envisioned.

During the Founder’s Day celebrations, Atiku disclosed the real motives behind establishing the AUN, emphasizing that it wasn’t for political gain but rather to give back to a society that had given him so much. In his paper titled “AUN in the Age of Socio-Economic Crisis and Emerging Disruptive Technologies,” he made veiled references to leadership transitions and the challenges in aligning managers with his vision for the university.

Atiku emphasized the importance of focus, organization, patience, attention to detail, and persistence in realizing the vision of a developmental university. He called for a return to the original vision of AUN, urging continuity, fidelity to rules, and adherence to procedures.

Expressing disappointment in the university’s progress after 19 years, Atiku clarified that his investments were intended to see the university grow and serve humanity.

He highlighted AUN’s not-for-profit status but emphasized the need for self-sustainability and generating surpluses to reinvest in development.

While warning about the changing educational landscape due to emerging disruptive technologies and artificial intelligence, Atiku questioned AUN’s preparedness.

He raised concerns about the impact of technologies like ChatGPT on teaching and learning, cautioning that institutions need to be ready for such advancements.

Despite expressing frustrations, Atiku cautiously acknowledged AUN’s potential readiness but pointed out a “mistaken” philosophy that has afflicted both the institution and the Nigerian state.
