The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State has issued a fervent call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Governorship Candidate, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka.
The demand comes in the wake of allegations that Ajaka orchestrated an attack on the residence of the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Gabriel Longpet, following a heated confrontation with security agents.
The attackers reportedly engaged in a fierce gun battle and proceeded to set ablaze several vehicles within the commissioner’s residence.
Addressing the media in Lokoja, Kingsley Fanwo, spokesperson for the Kogi State APC campaign council, accused Ajaka of attempting to burn down the Kogi State Government House.
Fanwo linked the violence to the lack of consequences over the killing of Khadijat at Kotonkarfe, allegedly perpetrated by SDP agents. He asserted that the SDP candidate and his associates had been freely moving despite their involvement in the killing.
Fanwo expressed concerns that the attackers might be aiming to tamper with documents at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) related to the election.
He alleged that this could be an attempt to cover up irregularities in Kogi East, where APC supporters were purportedly killed, and results were manipulated.
Calling for swift action, Fanwo urged the Police, DSS, and other security agencies to arrest Muritala Yakubu Ajaka immediately to prevent further chaos in Kogi State.
He accused Ajaka of importing thugs into the state to create mayhem and destruction, urging Governor Yahaya Bello to ensure the safety of the people.
In response, the Director of New Media for the Muri/Sam Campaign Council for SDP, Isaiah Davies Ijele, condemned the assassination attempt on the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner.
Ijele emphasized that elections should not be treated as a war, and if there are concerns, the legal process should be followed without resorting to violence.
He called for accountability for those involved in the attacks on the INEC REC, expressing gratitude for the timely intervention of the Army in preventing further harm.
