In a widely circulated press briefing video, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu asserted that Igbo forebearers played a pivotal role in shaping the modern landscape of Lagos State, refuting recent claims by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

The Oba had stirred controversy by suggesting that Lagos State was founded by the Binis.

Iwuanyanwu, in response, underlined the historical significance of the Igbo community in Lagos, highlighting their contributions during the period when Lagos served as the federal capital territory (FCT).

He emphasized the role of Igbo forebearers in transforming swampy lands into habitable areas, investing in businesses, homes, and schools to develop Lagos into a thriving metropolis.

During the era when Lagos grappled with the challenges of becoming the federal capital, Iwuanyanwu noted that the Igbo community demonstrated a sense of patriotism, contributing significantly to the development of the territory.

He celebrated the pioneers and heroes of that time, recognizing them as instrumental in building the foundation of what is now a robust Lagos.

While acknowledging the strong relationships between the Igbo and Yoruba communities in Lagos, Iwuanyanwu stressed the need for compliance with construction laws.

He mentioned that Ohanaeze would find it challenging to defend any Igbo individuals who violate Lagos construction regulations.

Though he expressed a lack of detailed information about the ongoing demolition exercise in the state, Iwuanyanwu indicated that houses being demolished were reportedly in breach of land acquisition laws, built on roads and drainage lines.

In response to the situation, Iwuanyanwu urged adherence to the laws of the land, emphasizing the importance of obtaining proper land registration and government approvals before constructing buildings.

He indicated that compliance with these regulations would make it feasible for Ohanaeze to offer support and defense to individuals facing legal issues.
