200 Northern Legal Avengers Rally Behind Kano Governor’s Supreme Court Appeal

In a significant show of solidarity, 200 private legal practitioners from the 19 northern states have volunteered to support Governor Kabir Yusuf of Kano State in his appeal case at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Under the banner of the ‘Abba Kabir Yusuf Volunteer Lawyers Forum for the 19 – Northern States and Abuja,’ these legal professionals expressed their commitment to ensuring justice prevails in the gubernatorial election dispute.
Speaking at a press briefing held at Arewa House in Kaduna, Mr. Yusuf Ibrahim, a spokesperson for the lawyers, appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the Supreme Court to prevent Nigeria from sliding into a one-party state, emphasizing the importance of a robust democracy.
The lawyers voiced their concern over the independence of the judiciary in the country, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to the rule of law to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Expressing their solidarity with Governor Yusuf, the legal practitioners deemed the Appeal Court’s judgment in favor of the APC a clear miscarriage of justice.
Mr. Ibrahim stated, “We volunteer as private legal practitioners to participate in the litigation in solidarity for Gov. Yusuf at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. We want to represent the truth in the fight to reclaim his mandate and that of the people of Kano State.”
The group also called for a comprehensive review of the Electoral Act, highlighting the need to address anomalies in the judicial system and democracy.
According to them, pre-election matters should not be litigable issues once the winner is declared, and the power of the court to determine election outcomes should be carefully regulated.
In response to questions from journalists, Mr. Usman Ashafa, another member of the group, expressed dissatisfaction with the Appeal Court’s judgment, suggesting that it left much to be desired.
