Obi Slams Tinubu’s COP28 Squad as Economic Extravagance

Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, took to Twitter on Sunday to express his disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at the COP 28 global climate summit in the United Arab Emirates.
Obi criticized the size of the Nigerian delegation, comprising over 1400 delegates, most of whom are reportedly funded by the federal government.
Obi questioned the rationale behind the substantial delegation, drawing attention to its scale in comparison to more populous and affluent nations like China.
He argued that such an extensive entourage was economically imprudent, particularly considering the economic challenges facing Nigerians and Tinubu’s consistent calls for citizens to endure hardship.
Highlighting the economic disparities between Nigeria and China, Obi noted that China’s budget for 2024 is approximately $4 trillion, translating to about $2,860 per capita. In contrast, Nigeria’s budget is around $33 billion, averaging $165 per capita.
He underscored the significant differences in Human Development Index (HDI) rankings, with China at 79 out of 191 countries measured and Nigeria at 163 out of 191.
Obi reiterated concerns raised by newspapers and public opinion leaders regarding the delegation list.
He pointed out that many individuals, particularly those associated with the federal cabinet, seemed to lack official business justifying taxpayer-funded trips.
He criticized the inclusion of what he referred to as “non-relevant civil servants or relations, friends and hangers-on of high government officials.”
Calling for a departure from wasteful spending traditions, Obi emphasized the urgent need to reduce the cost of governance and redirect resources towards productive investments.
He urged a shift away from unnecessary ceremonies and showmanship in government behavior, advocating for spending to be tied to necessity and national priorities.
