The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, has emphasized the need for stakeholders to collaborate in developing Nigeria’s copyright system to enhance the country’s creative economy.

Speaking at a seminar on Copyright Law and Policy for officials of the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, the minister, represented by Mr. Patrick Oyong, Director of the Legal Drafting Department, highlighted the importance of expanding knowledge in the copyright sector.

The seminar, organized by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, aimed to foster collaboration among key players in the creative industry and raise awareness about the Copyright Act signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari on March 17, 2023.

The Act seeks to protect authors’ rights, ensure fair recognition and rewards for intellectual efforts, and align Nigeria with international copyright treaties and conventions.

Minister Fagbemi emphasized that global attention is focused on copyright development, and Nigeria should not lag behind.

He urged stakeholders to work together, providing a common synergy to develop the copyright industry within the country.

The Act also enhances the regulatory capacity of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, allowing for effective administration and enforcement.

During the seminar, the Director-General of the NCC, Dr. John Asein, outlined its purpose, which includes acquainting stakeholders with the global intellectual system, promoting creativity and innovation, and addressing issues arising from the Copyright Act.

The interactive meeting aimed to identify gaps in the Act, reviewing and strengthening the copyright system in Nigeria.

Directors from various professional departments, including Legal Drafting, International Cooperation, solicitors, public prosecution, and others, participated in the seminar.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and the NCC underscores the commitment to advancing Nigeria’s copyright framework and supporting its creative economy.
