In a significant move towards combating corruption, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is scheduled to officially launch the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2022-2026 in the first quarter of 2024.
The announcement was made by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Olasukanmi Fagbemi, SAN, during a seminar commemorating the United Nations International Anti-Corruption Day 2023 in Abuja.
Mr. Fagbemi highlighted the commitment of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to address corruption, noting that the FEC had previously approved the NACS 2017-2021 in 2017.
With the expiration of the previous strategy, the FEC extended its approval for an additional four years in November 2022.
The National Anti-Corruption Strategy revolves around five pillars aimed at driving efforts in both the public and private sectors.
These pillars include the Prevention of Corruption, Public Engagement, Campaign for Ethical Re-orientation, Enforcement and Sanction, and Recovery and Management of Proceeds of Crime.
The Attorney-General expressed the critical nature of inaugurating the NACS Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) and launching the new strategy in the first quarter of 2024.
The committee, chaired by the Attorney General of the Federation, includes key members from various ministries, ensuring a comprehensive and collaborative approach to tackling corruption.
Mr. Fagbemi highlighted achievements from the implementation of the previous NACS (2017-2021), including the establishment of a secretariat, development of implementation tools, and collaboration with anti-corruption agencies.
He outlined upcoming activities, including the official launch by President Tinubu, engagement with governors and stakeholders, activation of the Anti-Corruption Funding Framework, legislative advocacy, and incorporation of the NACS into the strategic plans of relevant agencies.
