Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, despite seeking President Bola Tinubu’s academic records in the U.S., is reluctant to release his own, prompting questions about transparency.

In a surprising turn of events, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declined to release his academic records, despite his legal pursuits to obtain President Bola Tinubu’s records from Chicago State University (CSU).

Atiku, who ran for the presidency in 2019 and 2023 as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, has faced calls for transparency regarding his educational history.

Premium Times, through letters dated October 3 and a reminder on November 13, requested Atiku’s academic certificates from primary school to university, including his claimed Master’s degree, as per his filings with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The former vice president has not responded to these requests.

The request for Atiku’s records came after his legal team went to the United States to compel CSU to release President Tinubu’s academic documents.

Atiku accused Tinubu of presenting a forged CSU certificate during the 2023 presidential election. However, the Supreme Court dismissed Atiku’s appeal, stating he didn’t include the forgery allegation in his initial petition.

Despite his pursuit of transparency in electoral processes, Atiku’s reluctance to release his academic records has raised eyebrows.

His spokesperson, Paul Ibe, previously clarified discrepancies in Atiku’s WAEC certificate, revealing it was initially awarded to “Siddiq Abubakar.” Atiku later swore an affidavit stating “Sadiq” and “Atiku” are the same person.

Atiku’s demand for Tinubu’s records aligns with the call for high standards in public figures. However, his unwillingness to share his own records raises questions about his commitment to transparency and accountability.
