In a recent development, it is speculated that Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State may be contemplating a move to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a report by New Telegraph.
The report suggests that Governor Alia is engaged in substantive discussions with PDP leaders as he no longer feels assured of securing the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
The potential defection follows a recent clash between Governor Alia and Benue APC Zonal Vice Chairmen, who criticized him for not involving them in decision-making processes.
The Governor responded through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, asserting that it was unreasonable for party stakeholders to expect him to consult them on every appointment and action.
The statement from the Chief Press Secretary dismissed allegations that the Governor favored individuals outside the APC who purportedly worked against him during elections, deeming such claims as baseless and stemming from “petty resentments drawn from psychotic imagination.”
Sources suggest that Governor Alia is exploring the possibility of joining the PDP and has engaged in discussions with key party figures, including former National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu, Senator David Mark, and Senator Gabriel Suswam.
The talks reportedly involve assurances of the PDP providing Governor Alia with the party’s platform and structures if he decides to defect from the APC.
As the situation unfolds, it is anticipated that Governor Alia will continue discussions with PDP leaders in the coming days.
The potential defection could significantly impact the political landscape in Benue State, with implications for the forthcoming elections.
