Ondo State’s political landscape has been anything but calm recently, with Acting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa making headlines as he returned to the state just two days after a crucial meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Aiyedatiwa’s return follows the Ondo State House of Assembly’s declaration of him as the acting governor in response to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s letter notifying them of his medical leave.

The Speaker of the House, Olamide Oladiji, confirmed the arrival of the awaited letter on Wednesday in Akure.

The statement from the Speaker explained that Governor Akeredolu, in adherence to medical advice for a follow-up after recuperation, had officially informed the State House of Assembly about his medical leave. This paved the way for Aiyedatiwa to step into the role of acting governor.

Aiyedatiwa, who had engaged with President Tinubu and other key stakeholders to address the political logjam in Ondo State, has now returned to resume his duties.

His arrival at Akure Airport, via a commercial airline, was met with a reception led by Ifedayo Abegunde, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Director of Corporate Affairs at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

In the letter submitted to the State Assembly, Governor Akeredolu not only confirmed Aiyedatiwa’s acting capacity but also announced his plans for another medical leave.

This development comes against the backdrop of heightened political tension in the state during Akeredolu’s absence, with calls for a smooth power transition to Aiyedatiwa in accordance with constitutional provisions.

The situation has further led to divisions within the State Executive Council, with some commissioners aligning themselves with Aiyedatiwa.

Additionally, allegations of officials forging the governor’s signature have surfaced, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the unfolding political drama in Ondo State.
