FCTA Crushes 639 Illegal Motorcycles in Abuja Crackdown

In a continued effort to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles operating within the city centre, the Joint Task Force Team of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) impounded and crushed 639 motorcycles in Abuja. This recent action adds to the total of 1,509 motorcycles that have been seized and destroyed between August and December, reflecting the government’s commitment to curb illegal operations.
The motorcycles were confiscated from strategic locations in the city centre, including the airport road, Gudu, Lokogoma, and Games Village, among others. Mr Abdulateef Bello, the Director of FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), stated that the crushing serves as a deterrent to those who defy the ban on commercial motorcycles in the FCT. Despite repeated crackdowns, the number of defaulters remains high, prompting authorities to consider intelligence gathering to understand the persistent violations.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Haruna Garba, emphasized that impounding and crushing the motorcycles aims to eliminate potential security threats within the FCT metropolis. The motorcycles have been linked to criminal activities such as one-chance robberies, bag snatching, mobile phone theft, and drug peddling. The FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) also highlighted the role of motorcycles in facilitating crime, particularly by scavengers entering Abuja.
While the crackdown on illegal motorcycle operations continues, authorities believe that the ban will contribute to a reduction in criminal activities in the city. The FCTA remains committed to maintaining the ban and ensuring the safety and security of residents in Abuja.
