Nigeria has called for the reinforcement of bilateral ties with the United States to collectively address security challenges, particularly terrorism. Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, made this appeal during an official visit to the US. In a statement issued by the defence ministry in Abuja, Matawalle emphasized Nigeria’s openness to increased support in degrading terrorist activities within its borders.
During his visit, Minister Matawalle engaged with Congresswoman Betty McCollum and other members of the US Congress at the United States Capitol. He underscored the enduring friendship between Nigeria and the US, expressing the nation’s unwavering commitment to eliminating terrorism. Matawalle reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s determination to collaborate with friendly nations, aiming to enhance Nigeria’s overall security.
The minister highlighted the potential benefits of collaboration between the two countries, emphasizing its role in bolstering Nigeria’s capabilities to effectively address pressing security challenges, including terrorism. Matawalle’s call for strengthened ties aligns with the shared commitment of both nations to foster regional and global security.
In response, Congresswoman McCollum, who leads the US House Committee on Appropriation for Defence, affirmed the United States’ resolute willingness to support Nigeria in combating terrorism and other security threats. This support is envisioned through avenues such as intelligence sharing, information exchange, training initiatives, and the production of military hardware.
McCollum emphasized that the discussions between the two countries underscored their joint commitment to enhancing regional and global security. The congresswoman described the meeting as a pivotal moment in reinforcing diplomatic ties and collaborative efforts between Nigeria and the US.
