JAMB Denies Fee Increase for 2024 UTME, Stresses Commitment to Affordability

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has refuted claims of an increase in the registration fee for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2024. The examination body clarified that the cost of obtaining the UTME form remains unchanged at N3,500, despite an increase in the production cost.

In a statement issued by JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, it was emphasized that the Board is committed to keeping the registration fee low to avoid burdening candidates. Benjamin highlighted that one of the measures taken to prevent passing on the increased production cost to candidates is the provision of the Use of English reading text free of charge through a QR code.

According to JAMB, the perceived increase in fees is a result of the implementation of its cashless policy, where all fees payable by candidates to Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres are consolidated and paid along with their application fees to prevent exploitation by unscrupulous centre owners.

The Board clarified the breakdown of fees, stating that candidates are expected to pay N700 for registration, N1,500 as examination fees, and N1,500 for the optional Mock-UTME at privately-owned centres. However, the UTME/DE e-PIN remains at N3,500, and the registration fee of N700, which is to be paid to CBT centres by candidates, is now collected by the Board along with N1,500, the cost of setting the main UTME, and N1,500 for the optional Mock-UTME.

It’s important to note that JAMB’s announcement of an increase in registration fees for the UTME in 2024 was previously reported. The revised fees were stated as N7,700 for UTME registration, including a mock examination, and N6,200 for UTME registration without the mock examination. However, JAMB has clarified that the UTME/DE e-PIN remains at N3,500, and a detailed breakdown of the fees will be provided when JAMB releases the registration details on or before January 15, 2024.
