Federal Government to Form New Committee for Ambassador Selection

The Federal Government is preparing to establish a new committee responsible for selecting a fresh set of ambassadors to replace those who have been recalled. This development was disclosed by Alkasim Abdulkadir, an aide to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, during an interview in Abuja.
Abdulkadir highlighted that the process of appointing new ambassadors will involve extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders. He also clarified that all recalled ambassadors have returned to Nigeria, contrary to earlier reports suggesting that some of them faced financial challenges preventing their return.
On September 2, President Bola Tinubu issued a directive recalling all Nigerian ambassadors, including both career and non-career diplomats, with a deadline for their return set for October 31, 2023. This decision came after a thorough assessment of Nigeria’s diplomatic missions worldwide.
According to Presidential aide Ajuri Ngelale, this action aligns with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, reflecting his commitment to enhancing the efficiency and quality of services provided by Nigerian embassies and consulates globally. Ngelale stressed the President’s dedication to improving both domestic and international service delivery to citizens, residents, and potential visitors.
The recall of ambassadors is part of a broader strategy aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts and ensuring that the country’s foreign missions operate at the highest standards. With over 300 foreign missions, Nigeria’s diplomatic presence worldwide is significant, and the selection of capable ambassadors is crucial to advancing the nation’s interests on the global stage.
