Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has sparked controversy with his remarks suggesting that the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, would have faced severe consequences in China for alleged financial misappropriations.

Onanuga’s comments came in response to the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities, Chargeable Offences report, which indicted Emefiele for purportedly misappropriating funds during his tenure as CBN governor.

The report, authored by Jim Obazee, accused Emefiele of opening bank accounts without proper approval from the apex bank’s Board of Directors and Investment Committee. It also alleged that Emefiele unlawfully deposited billions of naira into 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China.

According to Obazee’s findings, Emefiele allegedly placed £543,482,213 in fixed deposits in UK banks without authorization. Onanuga’s post on X, a social media platform, suggested that if these actions had occurred in China, Emefiele and his associates would have faced severe consequences, possibly including the firing squad, for high treason.

The remarks by Onanuga have drawn attention and criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of comparing Nigeria’s legal system with that of China, known for its strict legal penalties.

The controversy surrounding Emefiele’s alleged misappropriation has raised concerns about financial governance and accountability within Nigeria’s institutions. The presidency’s response to the report has further intensified discussions about the need for transparency and adherence to due process in handling financial matters.

As the debate continues, stakeholders are calling for a thorough investigation into the allegations against Emefiele and appropriate measures to address any wrongdoing. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Nigeria’s financial sector and its reputation on the international stage.
