Speaker Gives Report of House of Representatives’ Six Months Achievements, Cites 962 Bills and 500 Motions

Mr. Abbas, speaking in Abuja on Saturday during the House’s plenary session before adjourning for the New Year break, highlighted the significant legislative accomplishments of the House over the past six months. He emphasized that the House had demonstrated remarkable productivity, having received and deliberated on 962 bills, 500 motions, and 153 petitions during this period. Notably, 120 bills have passed the second reading and are undergoing further review to address concerns raised during debates.

Additionally, Mr. Abbas noted that another 120 bills have been referred to committees for detailed analysis. He highlighted the successful passage of several bills, including the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, Federal Audit Service Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Oath Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2023. These bills, along with others like the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill, 2023, Federal Fire and Rescue Service Bill, 2023, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2023, aim to address various societal challenges.

Moreover, Mr. Abbas highlighted the House’s consideration of bills such as the Niger Delta Development Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023, Nigerian Medical Research Council (Establishment) Bill, 2023, Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill, 2023, and the South-East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2023. He emphasized that these bills are aimed at providing immediate relief and long-term solutions to societal issues, promoting citizen empowerment, social justice, economic growth, and peace and security.

In addition to legislative bills, Mr. Abbas underscored the House’s role in addressing pressing issues through motions. Over 500 motions were received and resolved by the House during this period, covering a wide range of topics such as oil theft, student loans, job racketeering, JAMB, and firearms. Mr. Abbas praised the effectiveness of motions in highlighting important issues affecting the nation and commended the lawmakers for their efforts.

Finally, Mr. Abbas reiterated the House’s commitment to maintaining a harmonious and professional relationship with the executive, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the two arms of government for effective governance.
