The recent transition of power in Ondo State, triggered by the passing of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has set the stage for a competitive race to fill the vacant Deputy Governor position. Several prominent figures have emerged as frontrunners in this closely watched contest, adding complexity to the selection process and highlighting the intricate dynamics of the state’s political landscape.

Chief Olugbenga Ale, the former Chief of Staff to the late governor, is among the notable contenders reportedly eyeing the position. Speculation suggests that his candidacy aims to compensate Owo, the hometown of the deceased governor, for its loss.

Another strong contender is Jumoke Ajasin, the daughter of the late governor, who has emerged as a prominent figure in the race. Mr. Rasaq Obe, the current head of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, is also seen as a formidable candidate vying for the deputy governorship slot.

Other key players in the race include Alade Mayorkun, a former federal lawmaker; Olumuyiwa Adu; and Omowunmi Olatunji-Ohwovoriole, a former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in the state. Their aspirations have intensified the competition, reflecting the diverse pool of candidates seeking the position.

The selection process has become a focal point of contention, with various factions advocating for different considerations. Some argue for candidates from Owo, citing the late governor’s hometown, while others point to traditional norms suggesting that the deputy should come from the Ondo Central Senatorial District, especially when the governor hails from the Southern region.

The race for the Deputy Governor position in Ondo State is poised to shape the state’s political landscape in the coming months, with contenders vying for the coveted role amidst shifting alliances and regional considerations.
