Security Chiefs Summoned as Nigerian Senate Responds to Plateau Violence

The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step in response to the recent attacks on Plateau communities, summoning top security chiefs to provide explanations regarding the Christmas Eve violence. The attacks, which occurred on December 23 and 24, 2023, disrupted the festive preparations of residents and resulted in the destruction of homes and the looting of properties.
Among those summoned are the Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff, Hassan Abubakar; Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi; and Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The Senate’s decision to summon these officials came after Senator Diiket Plang, representing Plateau Central, raised the issue during a session on Saturday.
During the session, Senator Plang expressed deep concern over the attacks, highlighting the displacement of numerous residents in the affected communities. His motion to invite the security chiefs was unanimously supported by the Senate.
Adding to the discussion, Senator Titus Zam, representing Benue North-West, voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of the service chiefs, criticizing their apparent lack of understanding of the country’s security landscape.
The summoning of the security chiefs by the Senate underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability in addressing security challenges across Nigeria.
