Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has announced that 82% of the funds for the state’s 2024 budget, amounting to ₦521.6 billion, will be sourced from internally generated revenue (IGR). Speaking at a Mass held at the Government House Chapel in Enugu, Mbah revealed that only about 12% of the budget would be funded through borrowing. He called for increased support from citizens through tax payments and the protection of public assets.
Governor Mbah emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the budget effectively to alleviate poverty and hardship resulting from subsidy removal. He assured that the budget would prioritize workers’ welfare and purchasing power, urging them to be prepared to give their best.
The governor stressed the importance of citizens’ support in safeguarding government assets, stating that vandalism or theft of these assets would ultimately harm the people of Enugu State. He urged citizens to pay their taxes, emphasizing that the revenue generated would be used for public benefit.
Mbah emphasized the government’s intention to rely on domestic revenue rather than excessive borrowing, noting that less than 13% of the budget would be borrowed. He highlighted the budget’s focus on addressing unemployment and improving infrastructure, including the construction of 260 smart schools and 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centres.
The governor outlined the benefits of these initiatives, including improved access to quality education and healthcare for civil servants and the general population. He also mentioned plans for a mass housing project, aiming to construct 20,000 units to address housing challenges in the state.
