Minister Denies Wrongdoing Amidst Controversy Over Fund Transfer Request

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has found herself at the center of controversy following a request to transfer funds designated for vulnerable Nigerians into a private individual’s account. Ms. Edu, facing backlash over the matter, has expressed her reliance on divine strength amidst the challenges.
In a statement shared on her Facebook page, Ms. Edu addressed the criticisms, attributing them to corrupt forces attempting to hinder her efforts to assist vulnerable Nigerians. She categorically denied any wrongdoing, labeling the accusations as baseless attempts to undermine her commitment to transparency, accountability, and the fight against corruption.
Despite the challenges, Ms. Edu affirmed her determination to uphold integrity and dedication in her service, emphasizing her belief in the power of truth prevailing. She sought to reassure the public of her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of the less privileged, soliciting their trust and support.
However, leaked memos revealing her request to transfer funds into a private account have sparked further controversy. The Accountant General, Oluwatoyin Madein, accused Ms. Edu of disregarding financial regulations by making such a request. Ms. Madein clarified that while the request was received by her office, it was not actioned, and the ministry was advised on proper payment procedures.
According to a report by Peoples Gazette, Ms. Edu had written to the Accountant General’s office in December, seeking to transfer N585 million intended for poverty reduction in Akwa-Ibom, Cross-River, Lagos, and Ogun states into a specific UBA account belonging to one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.
