The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced its forthcoming introduction of a Bus Rapid Transportation System (BRT) in Abuja to alleviate the city’s transportation challenges. Dr. Abdulateef Bello, the Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), revealed this plan during an engagement with stakeholders in Abuja.

Dr. Bello emphasized that the FCTA has finalized arrangements to introduce buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to address mass transit issues in Abuja. He urged stakeholders to support this initiative, which aims to improve the transportation landscape in the city.

The Director highlighted that the introduction of these buses on various routes will help phase out old and unreliable vehicles and taxis that have been causing problems on Abuja’s roads. Additionally, the FCTA intends to reclaim the 46 Taxi Ranks in the territory to reorganize them for licensed operators.

Explaining the rationale behind these plans, Dr. Bello stressed the importance of standardizing Abuja’s transportation system, especially considering the city’s rapid development. He emphasized that a well-organized transportation system is crucial for meeting the diverse needs of Abuja’s residents.

Dr. Abubakar Sadiq, Chairman of RTEIN Mass Transit, expressed his approval of these initiatives and urged the Administration to involve key players in the transportation sector in their implementation.
