The Federal Government has been ordered by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja to pay N100 million to Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for violating his right to personal liberty.

The judgement was delivered in a human rights suit filed by Emefiele against the Federal Government, where Justice Adeniyi ruled that the extended detention of the ex-CBN chief without trial constituted a clear infringement of his fundamental rights.

As part of the ruling, the court issued an injunction prohibiting the Federal Government and its agents from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.

Emefiele’s legal action stemmed from his prolonged detention in the custody of the Department of State Services following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu on June 10, 2023.

In his plea to the court, Emefiele sought an award of N1 billion in damages and sought to prevent any further arrests or detentions by the government.
