Sensitization Program Sparks Controversy over Treatment of Fallen Heroes’ Families

In observance of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Nigerian Legion has conducted an educational program to raise awareness among school children about the significance of promoting national unity and the values of sacrifice.

Organized by the Beracah Economic Empowerment Foundation, the sensitization initiative aimed to garner support for military veterans and the families of fallen heroes. Held in Abuja on Thursday, the program centered on the theme, “Honouring Our Heroes: Bridging the Generational Gap.”

Retired Maj.-Gen. Abdul-Malik Jibril, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, emphasized the importance of educating young citizens on the symbolism of wearing emblems representing the Armed Forces. He underscored the responsibility of the youth in acknowledging the sacrifices made by fallen heroes in unifying the nation.

Jibril highlighted the dedication of military personnel in safeguarding the country, often at great personal cost, and stressed the need to recognize and appreciate their sacrifices. He emphasized that while the past cannot be changed, the present and future are within the nation’s power to influence, urging Nigerians to honor and respect service members both in life and in death.

The national chairman called for increased support for the Nigerian Legion, particularly through generous donations to cater to the needs of children and widows of fallen heroes. He noted that the relative peace in Nigeria is a testament to the sacrifices made by soldiers and called on all Nigerians to contribute to the welfare of veterans and their families.

Mrs. Maria Emmanuel, the Executive Director of Beracah Economic Empowerment Foundation, expressed the initiative’s goal of instilling in young minds the values of sacrifice, duty, and appreciation for the nation’s fallen heroes and veterans. She emphasized the importance of reflecting on the sacrifices made by soldiers and passing on their legacy to future generations.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an annual event held on January 15 to honor members of the Nigerian armed forces and veterans and commemorate the end of the Nigerian Civil War. As part of the program, students recited poems in honor of the fallen heroes and veterans.
