Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has taken a significant step to boost the morale of medical doctors and health workers in the state by approving a 100 per cent hazard allowance for them. This announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the pioneer medical students of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, and the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) at the Government House in Lokoja on Wednesday.

The decision to grant a 100 per cent hazard allowance comes as a welcome development, especially in light of the challenges faced by the medical community. Governor Bello’s administration inherited accreditation issues concerning the pioneer set of medical students from the previous administration. In response, the governor placed these students on scholarships in various tertiary institutions across the country to ensure the continuity of their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programs.

Accompanied by their parents and the university’s management, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Marietu Ohunene-Tenuche, the students expressed their gratitude to the governor for his support in financing their studies and his overall investments in the state’s education sector. Prof. Ohunene-Tenuche also commended Governor Bello for his efforts in advancing education in the state, noting that the university is now on track for full accreditation and offers various programs such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Nursing Science.

Dr. Olusola Baoku, Chairman of the NMA, Kogi chapter, praised Governor Bello for his accomplishments in the state’s health sector. He acknowledged Kogi as one of the seven states in the federation addressing hazard allowances for medical doctors with a 50 per cent payment. Dr. Baoku also commended the improved medical infrastructure provided by the Bello administration and expressed optimism about the establishment and operation of a medical college in Kogi.

Governor Bello reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing healthcare by leveraging the state’s resources and policies to train medical professionals both within and outside the state. He emphasized the need to address the manpower gap in the country caused by professionals leaving for opportunities abroad. The governor assured continued improvements across all sectors in Kogi, particularly in healthcare delivery, and announced that the 100 per cent hazard allowance for medical doctors and health workers would take immediate effect.
