NAFDAC Under Fire Over Alleged Delay in Investigating Plantain Chips Controversy

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched an investigation into an allegation that a woman fried plantain chips using oil adulterated with polythene, following a viral social media post.

The post claimed that the woman melted approximately five pieces of “olonka rubber” (polythene) into the oil before frying the chips. In response to this allegation, NAFDAC’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, released a statement confirming the agency’s awareness of the viral posts and its commitment to verifying the claim.

“The attention of the Management of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has been drawn to viral posts on social media alleging that a woman fried plantain chips using oil adulterated with polythene,” the statement read.

NAFDAC assured the public that it is taking a science-based approach to investigate the matter thoroughly. The agency stated that it will conduct necessary laboratory tests to ascertain the validity of the claim. Additionally, NAFDAC emphasized the importance of vigilance among consumers of its regulated food products.

“We advise the public to remain vigilant when consuming NAFDAC regulated food products,” the statement continued. “NAFDAC is proactive in safeguarding public health, and we assure the public that a thorough investigation into this disturbing claim will be conducted.”
